NEUROFEEDBACK?

Several functions in our body and mind are unconscious and automatic, thus we cannot consciously have an impact on them. Our brain can be dysfunctional without us consciously being able to help. The term neurofeedback describes the feedback that the brain receives from the different frequencies emitted by the electric current in the brain. Neurofeedback provides moment-to-moment information to an individual on the state of his/her brain’s physiological functioning. it is like the brain watching itself in a mirror.

The art of neurofeedback has been practised for more than 30 years, but it remains, surprisingly, little known or utilized.

MANY APPLICATIONS

The main applications are stress and anxiety management, and peak performance. The most applied disorder is ADD/ADHD, patients suffering from various disorders have found relief with neurofeedback-training after long treatments with just talking-therapy and medication.

HOW DOES NEUROFEEDBACK WORK?

In neurofeedback-training you just sit down and watch a computer screen or play a video game (with electrodes attached to your head). There is nothing you need to do consciously, actually, you cannot do anything consciously - your brain does the job. The brain is super-interested in it’s own activity and learns to regulate itself by producing more appropriate activity and inhibit unregulated activity.

MORE HEALTHY SELF-REGULATION

Neurofeedback is not about chasing symptoms or curing a specific disorder. In neurofeedback we simply aim at producing more healthy self-regulation that can then transform to better mental health, better performance.

IN THE FRONTLINE OF DEVELOPMENT

In this video, Sue and Siegfried Othmer, the masterminds of Othmer-method neurofeedback, demonstrate the basis of neurofeedback. The method is constantly developing as a dialog between clinical work and research, but this (not quite recent) video is a good starting point.

MORE INFORMATION:

The status of neurofeedback in 2017 is “promising but unproven”. We need double blind experiments to achieve evidence based status. Unfortunately, that will take years. Meanwhile it is possible to monitor the development by googling “neurofeedback” and “pubmed”. Please have in mind that there are several approaches to neurofeedback and the field developing rapidly. Your best bet is to see if it works for you.
